Love Those Ants
Joette Calabrese,HMC,CCH,RSHom
I love ants. Do you know the kind? The big, crunchy type called carpenter ants.
“Eeeeeeuuu,” you might say. But for homeowners, they’re actually useful.
30 years ago, when we bought our home in the city, we were freaked by the number of
carpenter ants that were showing their ugly faces in our bedroom and the living room below.
They were so full-sized and sturdy and it looked as though they’d had a steady diet of
steroids.
Our first thought, was that the house was going to collapse from the amount of wood they
had ingested. Needless to say, I would never use an insecticide (too toxic), so we needed to
find another way. Instead, I sat on the floor with my newborn one afternoon and closely
watched where it appeared they were coming from and soon it was evident that it was
somewhere near our bedroom window. My husband pried up the window sill and…oh my!
It looked like a national geographic special on the colonization of African killer ants!
The first thing we did was gut out all the rotted wood and there was plenty of it. Not a single
morsel of rotted wood remained when we completed the project. That meant no food for the
ants. Hence no ants.
In the end, we were grateful to the ants for having pointed the way. They showed us that
there was rotted wood needing our attention. After shoring up the front wall of the house,
we could rest assured that the house would stand for another 80 years.
And so the ants were our guides. They were, in fact, a symptom of a problem that we never
would have known about, if they had never appeared in our bedroom.
ANTS AS SYMPTOMS
Had we only killed the ants with pesticides, we might indeed have removed that particular
colony. But then, we‟d have been left with the same rotted wood, which would attract yet
another colony in no time. So, you might say that the ants were a symptom; not a cause.
This is not unlike any other symptom with which we’re presented. When a child gets a rash,
it represents a deeper pathology that needs to be examined and not something to suppress
with drugs.
In fact, if we cover up the symptoms with cortisone, we only allow further illnesses to occur.
The eruptions are there for a reason. Don’t shut them up! Listen to their information.
Cortisone and most ointments are like insecticides; they don’t get to the root of the problem,
instead they simply disengage the symptoms.
For my time and money, I’d rather uproot the issue, not hold it at bay. That’s why I teach
mothers and others how to use homeopathy.
