Eco-Friendly Friday: Skip the Dryer Sheets

Dryer sheets eliminate static cling, soften your clothes, and give them a pleasant scent. How do they do that, and at what cost to our health? Fabric softener sheets are covered with chemicals that, when heated, coat your clothing to do the above mentioned things. Companies are only required to list the active ingredients or those known to be hazardous to health on the box. That is why you won’t find a list of ingredients on most boxes.

There may not be large quantities of chemicals in dryer sheets, but once they are on your clothes, your skin absorbs these chemicals. But, there is a very safe option for eliminating static cling and softening your clothes. Simply add a cup or two of vinegar to your rinse cycle, and clothes will come out fresh and soft! They won’t have a scent, but I’ll take clean over chemically scented!

I have been purchasing my vinegar at Costco, and also use it to kill my weeds, and in the dishwasher as a rinse agent, among other things.
