Daily Immune Booster

With all the news about the horrid flu, stomach bugs, etc. going around right now, I wanted to share a daily step I take to keep my immune system strong and remain healthy.

Every year of my adult life I have gotten all kinds of crud in the winter. My healing journey began three years ago, and each winter I have been more well, and this year has been fantastic! While I have done much to improve my inner terrain through diet, (cutting out gluten, dairy, sweeteners  and caffeine) I feel another way that I have been able to boost my immunity is drinking a very simple tea each morning.

I posted the recipe for my Zap-A-Cold tea last year. I had been making it at the first sign of feeling under the weather, and it would literally stop the cold in its tracks and make me feel better. This year, I have been making it every morning and it is the first thing I drink.

The ingredients are quite simple- fresh garlic, fresh ginger, and fresh lemon juice. Honey is optional. Ginger and garlic are natural antibiotics, and lemon is high in vitamin C and cleanses the liver so that it can properly detox the body.

Directions to make Immune Boosting Tea:

Boil 2-3 cups of water. Toss in 3 cloves of lightly chopped garlic, still in large pieces. Add about a half inch of ginger, also lightly chopped. When water begins to boil, remove from heat and let sit for 5-10 minutes.

Squeeze juice of one lemon into a mug, and pour over contents of pot into mug using a strainer. Add a drizzle of honey if you’d like to sweeten it up a little. Enjoy! If you drink this water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, it also gets your digestive juices flowing and works to detox the body. The activated hydrochloric acid in your stomach can work to attack toxins when it is not being used to digest your food. Try to wait a half hour to an hour before eating to benefit from the stomach acid at work.

We were surprised at how good it tastes! My husband prefers it over his store-bought teas. Thanks for the recipe!

I could really use an immune boost right now. Since November, I have been getting one cold after another. I finally start feeling better for a couple days and then I get hit with it all over again. Would you recommend making large quantities of this to last for several days? Or do you think it would lose potency?

I’ve been getting this question a lot, and honestly, I’m not sure. I don’t know if they will lose their antibacterial properties over time. I would say, make it fresh when you can, and if you make some ahead of time, it certainly won’t hurt! It only takes me about 5 minutes to make it each morning. I could probably make it in my sleep since I make it so much! :)

We have been taking/eating a lot of garlic this winter and so far MOST of us have avoided the various flus and other crud going around. Please consider sharing your post with us at the Eco-Kids Tuesday Link-Up! http://likemamalikedaughter.blogspot.com/2013/01/an-enchanted-childhood-playschool_26.html

  4. We’ve been drinking Cayenne and Lemon Juice every morning! It’s great stuff and we don’t get sick, even though most of my husband’s patients are coming in sick.
    Thanks for the recipe!

  5. Whenever I start to feel something coming on, I’ll brew a pot of this! I’ve never included garlic before though, so next time I’ll be sure to add some in. It really does work! Several times this year at the first sign of a sore throat I make this concoction and the next day I am back to normal. I often feel better right after drinking it!
