I just read your great article about how to reduce toxins in your home, and I was wondering what you thought about portable air filters/air purifiers for home use, and how much they genuinely improve indoor air quality? I recently purchased two air purifiers for our apartment (the two that were rated as the “most effective” at reducing dust, mold, and other allergens by Consumer Reports in 2010) but I figured you might have additional insights or opinions on the matter of air purifiers. Maybe you’ve already blogged about it — if so if you could send me the link that’d be great!

Thanks for your question Cherish! I’m not an expert on air purifiers, but I do think the HEPA ones can help trap allergens that are in the air. If you have pets, asthma, or allergies, I think the reasonably priced in-room filter may help with this. I am not so sure on their ability to trap VOCs and other small chemical toxins that are in the air though. It seems you have done your research, which is important. Have you noticed any improvements so far in air quality in your apartment?
Hi, Katie! It’s your cousin Erin. So we’re trying to keep our play set in decent condition and are wondering if you have any suggestions for a wood stain and where to buy it. Our play set looks a lot like the one I’ve seen in photos of yours on FB. Have you used a stain to protect yours? Also, what’s your experience with organic lawn care products? We don’t treat our lawn with traditional chemicals and are wondering if there’s anything out there that can help our lawn look great but not be full of harmful chemicals. Any retailer suggestions in the Dayton/Cincinnati area would be appreciated or suggestions on products. Thanks! I love what you’re doing, it’s so helpful!
We have not stained our playset, but it needs it badly! I’ll let you konow what I come up with.
As for lawn products, I have done some major research as of late, and there are a few companies that provide organic lawn care locally, but they only do certain sections of the city and we are out of the area. Scott’s has an organic program, but I didn’t really trust it and it was REALLY pricey. Basically, they just don’t use pesticides and use fertilizer so I didn’t understand why it cost so much. I actually am reviewing a product from an online company called Organic Lawn In a Box. Unfortunately, I won’t know how well it works for awhile. Our lawn is BAD from not using chemicals, but we aerated it and overseeded this spring, and are keeping it cut high to choke out weeds. I’ll be posting about that soon! I have read several of your pages/articles already and you are sharing information that I have been personally researching and concerned with for the last several months (i.e., the environment and all the chemicals in products we use in my household). I have twin 1 1/2 year old daughters that I want to keep safe from harsh chemicals as well as show them how important it is to lessen our environmental footprint.
